Firm Level Evidence of Disaster Impacts on Growth in Vietnam

Abstract The theory about the impacts of natural disasters on firms is ambiguous and empirical evidence this topic scarce, which hampers design disaster risk reduction climate change adaptation policies. In paper we identify short-run storms floods firm growth in labor, capital, sales, using Enterprise Census data (2000–2014) for Vietnam. We define with three different measures: physical intensities, number deaths, economic damage. performance these measures compared by estimating dynamic models Blundell–Bond system generalized method moments. find that flooding increases labor capital but reduces sales significantly up to 3 years after flooding. also some positive mostly negative within strike. are more pronounced persistent small medium sized firms. Finally, unlike at macro level, direction scale found level fairly consistent across measures.
